A Model for Holistic Change

Recognized by the Urban Land Institute as a national model for community redevelopment, the East Lake Foundation was created in 1995 to help transform one of Atlanta’s most troubled neighborhoods. Working from the belief that everyone deserves a chance to succeed, the foundation offers tools that enable residents to build brighter futures. Each year, hundreds of visitors come to East Lake to learn how our guiding principals might bring about similar changes in their own communities.

An Extraordinary Evolution

Serving as the blueprint for Purpose Built Communities, the redevelopment of the East Lake community is a landmark achievement in urban renewal. Founded in 1995, the East Lake Foundation was established to help transform the East Lake neighborhood and create new opportunities for the families living there. Working with neighborhood residents and expert public and private partners, the Foundation developed a new community on the site of a former public housing project. This approach to building a strong community not only helps break the cycle of poverty, but also creates a place where people of all ages and incomes choose to live.

A Foundation for Future Success

Nearly 2,000 students attend an East Lake Education Pipeline school—East Lake Early Learning Academy, Sheltering Arms at East Lake, or Charles R. Drew Charter School. Drew Charter School has ranked amongst top 10 schools in the district each of the last seven years.

Drew Charter School Celebrates First Graduating High School Class

In May 2017, all 82 of Charles R. Drew Charter School’s seniors graduated and were accepted to at least one college. This was Drew Charter School’s first graduating class from its high school, which opened in 2013. The legacy class of 2017 represents the completion of the “cradle-to-college education pipeline” that is the cornerstone of the East Lake neighborhood’s transformation.
