A Model for Holistic Change

Recognized by the Urban Land Institute as a national model for community redevelopment, the East Lake Foundation was created in 1995 to help transform one of Atlanta’s most troubled neighborhoods. Working from the belief that everyone deserves a chance to succeed, the Foundation offers tools that enable residents to build brighter futures. Each year, hundreds of visitors come to East Lake to learn how our guiding principals might bring about similar changes in their own communities.

An Extraordinary Evolution

Serving as the blueprint for Purpose Built Communities, the redevelopment of the East Lake community is a landmark achievement in urban renewal. Founded in 1995, the East Lake Foundation was established to help transform the East Lake neighborhood and create new opportunities for the families living there. Working with neighborhood residents and expert public and private partners, the Foundation developed a new community on the site of a former public housing project. Since that time, violent crime has dropped in the neighborhood by 97%. Residents are engaged in health and wellness programs, and many are becoming homeowners.

In the coming years, even more people will have the opportunity to thrive in East Lake; 108 new mixed-income apartment units will be constructed by the end of 2019.

A Foundation for Future Success

Nearly 2,000 students attend East Lake Early Learning Academy, Sheltering Arms at East Lake, or Charles R. Drew Charter School. Drew students continue to academically outperform their peers in Atlanta and across the state.
