Healthy, Thriving Neighborhoods

We emphasize working closely with residents and local leaders to honor the history, priorities and needs of each neighborhood. Most struggling communities lack ready access to healthy foods, nearby health facilities or banking services.

A Foundation for Better Living

Our communities in Atlanta, Indianapolis and New Orleans each included the construction of a YMCA, job training services, and significant commercial investment based on resident needs.

In Atlanta’s East Lake community, the positive health outcomes we are observing include:

  • Reduced obesity in children
  • Decreased absenteeism at school
  • Lower rates of asthma
  • Increased recreational activity in the neighborhood

Fundamentals of Flourishing Communities

Strategies impacting the health of residents in Network Member communities include:

  • Community Design – great sidewalks, street, courtesy patrols, watchful neighbors
  • Amenities – swimming pools, play fields, YMCA, high-quality grocery stores, access to public golf courses
  • Programs – Out-of-school hour programs, nutrition, economic stability

Plans for Columbia Parc at the Bayou District in New Orleans include a YMCA, grocery store, health clinic and city park revitalization.

In Avondale Meadows in Indianapolis, a 70,000 square foot multi-use health and wellness center—including a YMCA and health clinic recently opened. Future plans include a full-service grocery store and commercial shops.
